A UFC Master's Division: Not as Crazy as It Seems

With the news of Chuck Liddell’s retirement, I've been thinking: why not roll out a Master’s division in the UFC?

How many guys over forty are still competing or have fought within the last three or four years?  Liddell, Randy Couture, Ken Shamrock, Dan Severn, Kimo Leopoldo, Bas Rutten, Mark Coleman, Don Frye, Renzo Gracie, Royce Gracie and Pat Miletich all come to mind.

While their recent fights are of interest because of their name recognition, you almost have to watch as if you’re peering away from an ensuing head-on collision involving a speeding fire truck and a rickshaw in fear of someone receiving grave injuries.

Imagine if the Mark Coleman/Brock Lesnar fight went off as originally planned a couple years ago?  Coleman likely would have been seriously injured.

It’s important to note the significance between being injured and hurt.  Everyone hurts after a fight, even if they dominate in Georges St-Pierre-like fashion.  Bumps, bruises, cuts, sprains and the like amount to "being hurt."

Injuries are debilitating—knockouts, concussions, fractures, joint separations and ligament and tendon tears—as they cause cessation of functionality of the inflicted area.  It’s not entirely unlikely that Lesnar would have quickly disabled Coleman via a barrage of brief yet heavily damaging blows.

An entertaining and interesting way to get Coleman back in the Octagon is to pair him with Randy Couture, like we saw at UFC 109 in February 2010.  While “The Natural” continues to defy father time at 47 years of age and remains competitive with men fifteen years his junior (Brandon Vera, Lesnar and Big Nog), he’s unlikely to maim a fighter in the proposed Master’s division.

While I give this scenario a less than one percent chance of unfolding, it could be done.  The UFC has less of a need for big named fights on the televised portion of a pay-per-view broadcast with the WEC’s inclusion going forward, but wouldn't a Ken Shamrock vs. Royce Gracie rematch be of interest from an albeit freak show standpoint?

Skeptics of this idea will quickly point out that both men are irrelevant and that Shamrock has been at best competitive and more often embarrassed in each fight since his first matchup with Tito Ortiz way back at UFC 40 in 2002.

But given the parallel decline that Gracie has experienced, these two create a compelling matchup.  Imagine a reincarnation of Shamrock/Don Frye verbal jabs from their Pride fight.  The prefight entertainment value and trip down memory lane alone gives this theory some cache.

Another barrier is securing approval from a sanctioning body, but given the relative frequency in which these guys are still fighting, it seems plausible.  Feeding one of these fighters to Anderson Silva equates to capital punishment, but Dan Severn vs. Don Frye is what it is: two aging (or old), former elite fighters slugging it out and entertaining long-time fight fans.

Another hang-up is potential safety issues.  This could be addressed with the inclusion of—gasp—headgear and modified rule changes.  Kicks and knees to the head and face could be stricken if headgear wasn’t mandated, without taking too much from a fighter’s arsenal (except Bas Rutten’s).  Rounds could be shortened from five minutes to three.

With upcoming cards expected to be extremely stacked given the WEC fights rolling in, Master’s fights could be limited to one per card, or every other, with each fighter making appearances every twelve to sixteen months or so.

The roster of fighters would be lean so weight classes would likely have to expand.  This could be accomplished by tweaking the middleweight division from 165 to 190 pounds, while stretching light heavyweight from 191 to 220 pounds, and heavyweight ranging from 221 to 265 pounds.

Weight cutting is an issue as fighters age so broader weight classes would limit the dehydration and potential cardiac problems that come with sweating off twenty pounds in twenty-four hours.

Another point is this: what do fighters like Frank Shamrock and Tito Ortiz have to look forward to?  Both are in their late thirties and can’t compete with elite level fighters.  With a Master’s division to look forward to at forty, they could take the foot off the gas and prepare for the next evolution in their respective careers.

Watching a fighter stick around because he needs the money is sad.  Watching someone do it with an eroding skill set is worse.  Some guys truly love to fight and Liddell was recently quoted in Kevin Iole’s Yahoo piece saying that while he was competitive in the gym, he just couldn’t put it together in the Octagon anymore.

That’s a tall task when he’s facing the Shogun Hua's and Rashad Evans's of the world, coupled with a weakening chin that comes with getting on in years.  Pair Liddell up against Rutten or Kimo Leopoldo? I get giddy thinking about it.

Liddell would re-stake his claim as the big fish—granted in a small pond—and it gives guys that are truly meant to fight and want to remain competitive a viable landscape in which to do so.

A Master’s division accomplishes that and all things considered, this idea doesn’t seem so far fetched.

Scary moment on WEC 53 preliminary card

Eddie Wineland and Ken Stone had a frightening moment during the preliminary card at WEC 53. From Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole, who was cageside:

Stone pulled guard and Wineland walked him across the cage and backed him to the fence. Then, he did a Rampage Japan-style slam and Stone was out cold immediately. Down for 5-10 minutes and then out on a stretcher.

Stone was taken from the arena in a stretcher, but he did not sustain any serious injuries, and was moving and breathing without trouble.

Otherwise, the WEC 53 undercard was called by several on-site media the most exciting undercard they've seen. Only two fights went to the judges cards.

Complete undercard results:

Renan Barao def. Chris Cariaso via submission via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 1, 3:47

Yuri Alcantara def. Ricardo Lamas via knockout (punches) - Round 1, 3:26

Danny Castillo def. Will Kerr via knockout (punches) - Round 1, 1:25

Eddie Wineland def. Ken Stone via knockout (slam) - Round 1, 2:11

Brad Pickett def. Ivan Menjivar via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Shane Roller def. Jamie Varner via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 1, 3:55

Danny Downes def. Tiequan Zhang via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)

UFC audio memories: Liddell and Hughes before UFC 64

Two of the biggest stars in the history of MMA sat down for a long interview in 2006. Liddell was prepping for his UFC 66 showdown with Tito Ortiz. Even back then, Liddell was wary of Tito showing up for a fight.

Hughes was coming off his UFC 63 win over B.J. Penn. He talks about Georges St. Pierre disrespecting him coming into the Octagon after that win. Hughes would go on to loss his belt against GSP at UFC 65.

This was a great interview because Liddell forgot he was on live radio and cursed 15-plus times.

Humbled Vera learned you can't trash talk in the Octagon

Brandon Vera has never lacked for confidence. In fact, when the media and fans would question his lack of aggression is some fights, Vera would fire back defiantly. But it was clear, he wasn't the same fighter who shot up the charts in 2005 and 2006. It took a major wake-up call to finally shake up Vera.

The 33-year-old quickly rose to the top of the heavyweight division with wins at Ultimate Fight Night 2 and UFC 57, 60 and 65. He eventually met his match against the massive Tim Sylvia and Fabricio Werdum at heavyweight. Then two years later he took hotshot Jon Jones too lightly.

"I for sure, did not give Mr. Jones the respect he deserved and that's my fault," Vera during the UFC 125 prefight press conference (24:50 mark).

Vera (11-5) lost his concentration at the worst time.

"When I was underneath him, I'm remember being off in my own world while he was throwing elbows and missing. I was holding his wrist and thinking 'geez man, all the hype was about you ... this is what you have to offer on the ground, really?' I remember I said 'you f'n suck,' but before I said the word suck, the elbow came down on my face and smashed my face."

The Jones' elbow broke Vera's cheekbone. MMA can be incredibly dangerous if you don't defend yourself properly. The Filipino-American paid the price and was sidelined for seven months.

"That's when I realized right then and there, 'That's what you get you bastard. That's what you get for thinking you're so ahead of the game.'"

For Vera, who is just 3-3 since dropping to light heavyweight, the success in his late-20's came too fast.

"Honestly [it was] my arrogance. The fights seemed easy. I was in there training hard, training hard [then] I go in there and knock someone out real quick. Train hard, train hard then knock somebody else out real quick," said Vera [20:58 mark]. "My arrogance caught up to me. My head got real big and somebody needed to pop it. Too bad they had to pop my face for it to pop, but it's popped. I'm back. My head's level and I'm ready to go."

Vera better be right-minded. He's got a tough test at UFC 125 in aggressive striker Thiago Silva and frankly his job may be on thin ice if he loses a third straight fight.

UFC 125: Will This Be The End Of Frankie Edgar's UFC Title Run?

Frankie Edgar has been impressive over the past five years with 13 wins and only one loss in his UFC career.  Edgar won the UFC Lightweight Championship belt by unanimous decision against BJ Penn in UFC 112 and defended his title with another unanimous decision over Penn in UFC 118. This time around, Edgar is squaring off against Gray Maynard who is undefeated in the UFC and the only fighter to ever defeat Edgar after hanging in the standup and controlling Frankie on the ground in the final round.

Overview

The Vegas betting lines indicate Maynard as a favorite to take the Lightweight Championship but Edgar hasn’t been a favorite in either of his last two victories. Edgar has evolved and matured as a fighter since his first bout against Maynard when Maynard put on a clinic and all three judges scored the fight 30-27 in favor of Maynard. Since that fight, Frankie Edgar has improved his takedown skills and in his last fight Edgar was able to take down BJ Penn, a fighter known for his top-notch takedown defense. Even though he has improved his takedown skills, Maynard has some of the best takedown defense in the business.

Edgar will most likely try to keep the fight standing and take advantage of his two inch reach advantage and deadly speed.  Edgar demonstrated his striking ability in UFC 118 by out striking the world class striker BJ Penn.

Prediction

Despite Edgar’s improved wrestling, expect Maynard to remain confident on the ground and look to exploit what Maynard believes to be Frankie’s inferior wrestling.  Maynard has an incredible ground game and has the clear advantage if this fight ends up on the mat.  If Frankie Edgar has improved his takedown defense enough to keep this fight standing up for long enough to land a barrage of punches, Edgar will come out victorious. However, at SeatGeek we are in agreement that Maynard will eventually get Edgar on the mat, and wrestle his way to an excruciatingly boring decision for the Championship.

Fan Sentiment Data

Even though the MMA community in general does not seem too hyped about this event, UFC tickets continue to be in strong demand. At SeatGeek, we love to use our data to analyze fan sentiment around major sports events including all major UFC events.

Looking at the average price of a ticket for UFC 125 is $269.53, more expensive than tickets to both UFC 118, averaging $242.44 per ticket, and UFC 124 which averaged $264.41 per ticket.  The high ticket prices for this event might be a result of the fact that there hasn’t been a major UFC event in Vegas since UFC 116 in July in combination with the scheduling on New Year’s Day.

Happy New Years and enjoy the fight!

WEC 53 post-fight: Coaching TUF, bonuses and more

"What a great way to finish that up!" Reed Harris, general manager of the WEC, said to start the final press conference for the WEC, following a blockbuster fight between Anthony Pettis and Ben Henderson. Harris was referring to the gravity-defying kick from Pettis that secured his win over Henderson and the WEC lightweight title. Other notes from the WEC 53 press conference:

-- The fight of the night bonus was given to Henderson/Pettis for their five-round bout, knockout of the night to Eddie Wineland for knocking out Ken Stone with a slam, and submission of the night was to Shane Roller for his rear naked choke of former champion Jamie Varner. The bonuses were for $10,000.

-- Henderson was emotional after the fight, thanking the WEC and his home crowd of Glendale, Ariz. He said he didn't remember the kick, but that he knows it will be on the highlight reel for a while.

-- "It still doesn't feel real," Pettis said about his title. He said he has done that amazing kick in practice before, but felt the pressure to do something big going into the final round of the fight. Henderson admitted that he was woozy after the kick, but conscious.

-- Cruz continued to push for a rematch with Urijah Faber, and pointed out how different he is as a fighter. "I'm a completely different fighter. My stand-up's better, my wrestling's better, my ground game's better. I'm on a whole different level than Urijah," Cruz said.

-- After the final WEC fights, Harris spoke of his fighters like a proud father. "All these guys are going to make a mark in the UFC, and I couldn't be prouder," Harris said.

-- "When it first happened, I was happy because I got the knockout, but then when he wasn't moving, I was worried," Eddie Wineland said about the frightening knockout of Ken Stone. He said that he made sure he got word Stone's health after the fight.

-- Though there were plenty of UFC stars on hand in Arizona, Harris was happiest about having a Bear in attendance. Harris, a native of suburban Chicago, said that he was excited to see Jim McMahon at the fights, the quarterback of the Super Bowl XX champion Chicago Bears.

-- Pettis' first fight in the UFC will be for the UFC lightweight title with the winner of the Jan. 1 bout between champ Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, but he doesn't care who it is. "I haven't had time to think about Edgar/Maynard yet," Pettis said. "I was fighting Ben Henderson, and it's all I cared about."

-- Cruz said he'd happily accept a coaching gig on "The Ultimate Fighter" against Urijah Faber. "I would accept it, and I would be stoked. It would be awesome, because I'd get my loss back."

-- Harris said that several of the unaired preliminary fights will be available for free  on UFC.com, and the Brad Pickett-Ivan Menjivar decision will be on Versus.com on Friday. More fights will be released over the weekend.

Jamie Varner Gets Cut Following Loss at WEC 53; Former Champ Won't Join UFC

Following his pro debut in 2003, Jamie "C-4" Varner built up an impressive record to 11-1 with two no contests before being extended an invite to perform on the sport's biggest stage with the UFC.  After splitting two fights with the premier organization, he ultimately found a home within the WEC.  His stock rose as he became a better fighter and eventually became the WEC Lightweight Championship.

Then 2010 struck. Despite his inactivity, he came up winless in all four of his outings, and for that reason, he will not be included in the recent highly publicized merge between the WEC and UFC.

Varner made his WEC debut back in 2007, following his six-and-a-half month stint with the UFC, on the undercard of WEC 29: Condit vs. Larson.  Varner impressed with a TKO win over Sherron Legget in the very first round.

The win over Legget catapulted him into a title shot for the WEC Lightweight Championship against then defending champion "Razor" Rob McCoullough.  Varner awed the Albuquerque crowd with his heavy hands as he pounded his way to a TKO win in the middle of the third frame, and with the win, Varner had reached the pinnacle of his division in the WEC.

Things began to crumble for the Arizona fighter in 2009 after he took a DQ win over fan-favorite Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone after Cerrone landed an illegal knee while Varner was on the canvas.  After given time to recover, Varner deemed himself unable to continue.  Understandably, the fans were disappointed and let it be known as Varner did little to rectify the situation.  Varner walked out of the cage in San Diego with the win as well as the title but not with the support of the fans.

Little did he know, that would be Varner's last taste of victory to date.

He carried the role of villain into his next bout with Ben Henderson who slapped on a submitted Varner with a guillotine choke midway through their five round clash. He's lost a ton of fans, his winning streak in the WEC had come to an end, and now, he was a fighter without a belt.  One would think things could only go up from there.

They didn't.

He entered the ring five months later against the acclaimed wrestler Kamal Shalrous, and while many could argue that he did enough to get the win, the ringside judges begged to differ and scored the bout a draw.  Next up was a long awaited grudge match between Varner and arch nemesis Donard Cerrone on the undercard of WEC 51: Aldo vs. Gamburyan in Cerrone's home state of Colorado.

Varner once again came up short in what would be voted as the fight of the night in which, after five hard fought rounds, neither fighter was quite ready to bury the hatchet.

Varner's recent loss to Shane Roller via first-round rear naked choke left the former lightweight champion 3-0-1 in 2010.  As bright as his future once was in the MMA scene and more specifically with the WEC, it was no longer bright enough.  It was recently made public that the organization that once made him a household name for fight fans all over the country would no longer be vouching for him during the final stages of their merge with MMA giant, the UFC.

Upon hearing the news, Jamie stated, “I am ready for 2011, there will be some changes in my game. It has been a nice ride with the WEC but its time for a change. Perhaps UFC will be in my future down the road...we shall see.”

Love him or hate him, there's no denying that Varner is one of the top talents in the world when speaking of the lightweight division.  All fighters hit a rough patch at one time or another.  Obviously, his came at a very inopportune time.  Yet, with a couple of solid wins, you shouldn't be suprised to see the Arizona Combat Sports product making his walk to the cage getting ready to do battle.

Don't fret for the former Lightweight Champion.  Clearly, he's going to keep fighting.  Maybe a tune up on a regional card or maybe he gets in touch with Strikeforce CEO, Scot Coker.

Either way, he'll be back soon.

Most likely with the crowd voicing their displeasure, not that it'll make much of impact on Varner.

The fact that he made his way back to the big leagues will be enough to silence his critics.

Live MMA Coming to MTV2 With New Bellator Deal

by Michael David SmithThe latest channel to venture into televising live mixed martial arts fights is a network few had expected: MTV2.

Bellator Fighting Championships announced today that it has reached a three-year deal to air live fights on MTV2, starting in 2011. Bellator will continue with its seasonal format of 12-week, eight-fighter tournaments, with the next tournament beginning in March.

At first blush, MMA and MTV might seem like strange bedfellows. For that matter, MTV and any sport would seem to be a strange pairing -- isn't MTV supposed to be music television?

Dana White fires the fans for Fight of the Night fail

The UFC tried something neat tonight by allowing the fans to hand out some bonus money. There was a lot on line. With a near-record gate of $4.586 million, the UFC was handing out $100,000 each to the fighters that the fans said put on the Fight of the Night.

Slap Cagewriter on the back, we called it.

When the news first emerged shortly before the start of UFC 124, we asked if the fans would judge objectively or turn it into a popularity contest?

We got our answer. Georges St. Pierre's destruction of Josh Koscheck (50-45 on all cards) was given the fan's nod as the best fight.

"The reporters aren't happy with it," Dana White joked at the postfight press conference. "It's one of the hazards. (The fans) are always chirping about how we mess it up and here we are."

White thought the real Fight of the Night was on the preliminary card. Sean Pierson and Matt Riddle beat the living hell out of each for three rounds.

The UFC and White even tried to give the fans a gentle nudge by showing the fight on the pay-per-view.

If you cast a vote at UFCvote.com, hope you enjoyed the chance to be the boss, now you're fired.

"They blew their chance," White said. "That's it. It's over."

White said he'd take care of Pierson and Riddle. White also joked with St. Pierre telling him that he owes $100,000 to his buddy Pierson.

Sean McCorkle Vs. Christian Morecraft Targeted For UFN 24

Very rarely do you hear that two fighters, coming off of a loss to the same opponent, will be targeted for a fight against each other.

Generally, the two fighters in question share a win in common or a loss in common, but they usually take a few fights before they face each other.

MMA Junkie reports via Fanhouse MMA that such an occurrence of the former may happen, provided both Sean "Big Sexy" McCorkle and Christian Morecraft put the fight in dried ink.

Both men suffered the first loss of their careers at the hands of Stefan "Skyscraper" Struve in their most recent UFC outings and will be looking to get back on the winning track at the expense of the other.

For McCorkle, the fight with Struve dropped him to 1-1 in the UFC after a first round TKO loss at UFC 124 earlier this month.

As for Morecraft, the loss to Struve is a fight that saw Struve bounce back in the third round after absorbing some rather grotesque punishment spoiled his UFC debut which came inside Oracle Arena in Oakland, California—the site of UFC 117 and the Anderson Silva-Chael Sonnen nail-biter.

Again, it's rare that two fighters face off against each other sometime immediately after losing to the same guy, but this instance may prove different.

The only other definite is that the fight is slated to occur at UFC Fight Night 24, a card that officially gained Tito Ortiz vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira as its main event, with "The Hunington Beach Bad Boy" set to face "Little Nog" in Seattle, Washington on March 26.

The official signing was posted by Fanhouse MMA reporter and MMA Journalist of The Year Ariel Helwani, the video of which can be seen here.

Also reported is the return of Anthony "Rumble" Johnson against Dan Hardy, a Welterweight bout which has further shaped up the card to be one of the most potentially-exciting Fight Night cards in UFC history.

Brock Lesnar Leaving UFC Reports: Why UFC Will Be Okay Without Him

Brock Lesnar may be leaving the UFC according to recent reports, but the UFC will be just fine without him if there is any basis to these claims.

While this seems more like a way of Lesnar trying to gain leverage in negotiations, Lesnar could very well leave the sport for good. Until we hear it from his mouth, we will never be sure if this is in fact his intent.

Should Lesnar leave the UFC, they may experience a temporary setback, but they will be okay without him in the long run.

Phil Baroni: 'It's Obvious That a Lot of People Are Counting Me Out'

After 10 years in this sport, no one has to tell Phil Baroni what's at stake on New Year's Day.

When you're a 34-year-old fighter on a two-fight losing streak who just happens to be facing a 23-year-old kid fresh off season 11 of "The Ultimate Fighter," it's pretty self-evident.

"It's obvious that a lot of people are counting me out, the UFC included," Baroni (13-12), who faces Brad Tavares (6-0) at UFC 125 on Saturday, told MMA Fighting. "You know, they're giving me guys off 'The Ultimate Fighter,' they never send me to expos, stuff like that. But I'm thankful for the opportunity to get that all back, and I'm going to start on New Year's Day and resurrect my career. I've done it before; I'll do it again."

If he doesn't, if he loses to Tavares on the UFC 125 prelims, well, Baroni doesn't really want to think too much about what will happen then.

MMA: The Top 10 Fights of 2010

It's already that time of the year again.

Doesn't it feel like a year ago that we were all arguing which was the best fight of 2009?

I had picked Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's epic battle with Randy Couture for No. 1 last year, but certainly wasn't part of the majority in thinking so.

Most people I talked to either picked Diego Sanchez's brutal war with Clay Guida or the five-round tug-of-war between Ben Henderson and Donald Cerrone.

The more I think of those fights, the more it does feel like a year. Or maybe even more.

Time seems to fly by when you have a lack of new memories to take the place of the old ones. But with MMA, that is never the case.

2010 had no shortage of memorable battles in the cage—or ring—making Couture's last real challenge seem like ages ago.

A lot can happen in a year. Bright contenders become champions or fall by the wayside only to be remembered as once overrated.

Champions continue to amaze or are deemed past their prime and rendered on the brink of relevancy.

Either way, nobody reads the intros.

On with the list!

Couture uses Twitter to 'kind of' retire

Randy Couture's in the land of indecision right now. He's caught between making movies and stepping back into the Octagon at the age of 47.

While on location for his latest movie role in a Bruce Willis film, Couture Tweeted Tuesday night that he's done fighting.

Multiple sources from his gym in Las Vegas, Xtreme Couture, confirmed that Couture has been talking about retirement but were unaware of the Tweet.

Josh Gross from ESPN.com exchanged text messages with Couture and the former UFC light heavyweight/heavyweight champ said he's still open to fighting.

Sources say that Couture was offered Lyoto Machida, but then the offer was rescinded.

Couture wants either Machida or Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

The Rua fight won't happen. After beating guys like James Toney, Brandon Vera and Mark Coleman, Couture still isn't at the front of the line for a shot at Rua's light heavyweight title.

A Machida fight is problematic because there are some within the promotion who worry about the fact that the Brazilian has lost two straight. A third loss in a row would be crushing for "The Dragon."

Couture was offered Quinton "Rampage" Jackson but has his heart set on Machida or Rua. Plus, can you fight someone like Rampage when you're "mixing" a training camp into all of your other endeavors?

Couture's lawyer also told Mike Chiappetta from FanHouse that the Tweet was "not an official announcement."

The Tweet also sounded very similar to what he told ESPNRadio1100 at the start of the month and what he told RawVegas.tv in early November.

It appears the UFC needs to talk Couture into fighting Jackson or Couture needs to convince the promotion that he should get Machida next. Couture seems to be much more intrigued stylistically by a bout against Machida.

UFC president Dana White was unavailable for comment. He and UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta are in Brazil.

Overeem does it! The massive MMA star crosses over to win K-1 WGP 2010 title

Alistair Overeem passed up on some big MMA fights this year to add the label of kickboxing champ to his resume. It paid off.

He suffered some rough moments last year in K-1, but with more dedication to his striking training in 2010, Overeem was a powerhouse in Tokyo this morning.

The Dutchman got better as the K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 went along. He won three fights in one night to take the WGP title and did so by beating out several K-1 legends.

By the time, he reached the final without a mark on his face, Peter Aerts was in big trouble. A fellow Dutchman, Aerts traded shots with the beast for about 35 seconds before Overeem overwhelmed him.

"The Reem" trapped Aerts in a corner and drilled him with a right hand followed by a body shot. Aerts fells to his knees. The referee jumped in to give Aerts a ten count, but the 40-year-old legend said he couldn't go any longer. Overeem won the tournament as a plus-205 choice.

The 6-foot-5, 261-pound, Overeem is unofficially the first heavyweight fighter to hold a major MMA belt and win a K-1 WGP title. He's also the Strikeforce MMA champ. The K-1 accolades only add to his reputation as an MMA star.

One downside of the win is the fact that Overeem is a virtual lock to try and defend his K-1 honor in 2011, meaning he'll be locked up for most of the November and December prepping if he can get out of the first round.

Overeem's toughest fight this morning actually came in the opening round.

Overeem is far from slick. He walks straight forward, willing to eat big shots so he can land his own bombs. That approach almost cost him against Tyrone Spong.

Early in the fight, the 231-pound Spong was too fast. Spong caught Overeem with a great counter left hook as the big guy tried a flying knee. It put the Dutchman on queer street. Spong wailed away and landed four or five more huge left hands, and got Overeem on the ropes with 1:45 left in the first. Overeem survived and his power just sapped Spong the rest of the way.

That career-high 231 pounds may have cost Spong in the long run.

Gohkan Saki was the opponent in the semis, but much like Aerts, the Turkish born fighter had to fight a war in his previous bout. Saki and Daniel Ghita kicked the hell out of each for four rounds. Saki won but his body was brutalized.

Overeem looked slow and was easy to hit, but he just waited for the smaller fighter to slow down, then he unleashed two vicious body kicks. The second got Saki to quit. HDNet's Michael Schiavello reported that Saki had broken his elbow and his right hand.

Aerts was looking to become a four-time WGP champ. Unfortunately, the old guy was also a mess by the time he faced Overeem. He ate way too many punches from 6-11, 292-pound Semmy Schilt in the semifinals. Aerts outlasted Schilt in that fight, but the damage had been done. There were actually thoughts he may not be able to fight in the final. Bettors pushed the line  minus-450 to minus-645 on Overeem by the opening bell.

UFC 124 Post-fight press conference: Who's next for GSP?

-- For the first time, the UFC allowed the fans to vote for the Fight of the Night, and that $100,000 bonus was given to Georges St. Pierre and Josh Koscheck by the fans. Mark Bocek and Jim Miller split the Submission of the Night bonus, each taking home an extra $50,000. Bocek's was for a triangle choke of Dustin Hazelett, while Miller won his bonus for slapping a kneebar on Charles Oliveira. Mac Danzig was awarded the $100,000 Knockout of the Night bonus for his quick KO of Joe Stevenson.

-- Dana White said he believed it was the Pierson/Riddle fight should have won the fight of the night, and the UFC will take care of those fighters. He also said that the fans blew their chance by voting in GSP/Koscheck, so they won't get another chance to vote in FOTN. Later, White told GSP that he owed Pierson, his training partner, $100,000 dollars.

-- Montreal delivered again, with 23,152 fans packing into the Bell Centre, bringing in one of the largest North American gates ever of $4.58 million. This was the fourth UFC event in Montreal.

-- The biggest winner of the night may have been Mike Dolce, the man behind the Dolce Diet, for helping Thiago Alves move past his weight problems. Alves said that getting on the Dolce Diet was not just a change in his diet, but a change in lifestyle, and that made the difference in how he fought against John Howard.

-- When asked about a possible GSP-Anderson Silva super fight, White was non-committal, saying "We'll see what happens." GSP said that he needs to check it out, because if he were to move up, he needs to gain muscle and stay up at middleweight. He pointed out how the weight class movement affected the timing of Roy Jones, Jr., and he doesn't want to move back and forth between weight classes.

-- GSP seemed open to fighting Jake Shields. "I like watching him fight, he's very meticulous, he beat up everyone at 170 and 185, I think he's amazing," GSP said about Shields. "He's probably the number one contender right now for my title."

-- GSP spoke about his post-fight embrace with Koscheck, saying that Kos apologized and said the trash was to hype up a fight. GSP thanked him for coming and fighting in Montreal. "In the end, we need a good guy, we need a bad guy, and it's a business," GSP said.

-- Jim Miller is often not regarded as one of the UFC's best lightweights, despite the fact that's he only lost to Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, two men fighting for the lightweight title. He said it does bother him, because he believes he is the No. 3 guy.

"It does eat at me a little bit. It does bother me," he said. He hopes to get another chance at Edgar and Maynard. "I want revenge. I want to beat those guys. Even though Frankie and I are friends, it was fun when we fought the last time. It will be fun the second time."

Junk food lover GSP explains the secret to his success

Georges St. Pierre let the cat out of the bag. Why is he so good? Cheeseburgers and nifty footwork.

GSP joined Andrew Krystal on Toronto's The Fan 590 to talk about his victory over Josh Koscheck. The UFC welterweight champ said analysts are concentrating too much on the work he did with his jab, saying his real secret is unique footwork.

He also talked about the only area where he splurges. St. Pierre said he loves taking his buddies out to nice restaurants. When he's solo, the champ eats like the rest of us. Right before this interview, he hit Burger King for a cheeseburger and fries.

Dominick Cruz Whips Scott Jorgensen, Earns UFC Bantamweight Belt

by Michael David SmithDominick Cruz destroyed Scott Jorgensen at WEC 53, winning an easy unanimous decision to defend his World Extreme Cagefighting bantamweight title and enter the UFC as its first bantamweight champion.

"I had a chip on my shoulder because a lot of people didn't believe in me," Cruz said. "Now, I think people believe."

Cruz, who improved to 17-1, is likely to face Urijah Faber in the first UFC bantamweight title fight. Faber is the only man ever to defeat Cruz, and Cruz said he wants a shot at revenge.

"I'm ready to fight Urijah," Cruz said. "Let's do it."

UFC and Strikeforce to have a belt-a-palooza to start off 2011

Clear your calendars, folks. 2011 starts out with a bang, as five different major championship belts will be on the line in the first quarter.

Jan. 1 -- Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard: This fight is not only for the lightweight belt, but will also give Edgar a chance to avenge the one loss on his record. Not only that, but whoever wins has his next fight decided, as WEC lightweight champ Anthony Pettis will get a chance to unite the belts.

Jan. 29 -- Nick Diaz vs. Evangelista Cyborg and Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza vs. Robbie Lawler: Strikeforce will put two belts on the line at this San Jose event. Though we're not getting the hoped-for bout of Diaz vs. Jason "Mayhem" Miller, the Jacare-Lawler match-up is a classic striker vs. grappler matchup.

Feb. 5 -- Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort: By the time he gets in the Octagon, Belfort will have had a 16-month break from the Octagon. Silva will be coming back from his last-minute submission win over Chael Sonnen.

Mar. 19 -- Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Rashad Evans: In Newark at UFC 128, Rua will test out the knee that's long been a problem while Evans will get a second shot at getting the light heavyweight belt.

It's also possible that Jose Aldo will get his first chance to fight in the UFC in the first quarter, as he expects to be fighting as soon as March

MMA Christmas: 10 MMA Fighters and What They Want Most This Christmas

So Christmas is upon us, and I've already given y'all ideas of what to get your favorite MMA fan this year, but I've been doing some digging the past couple of days and I've happened upon something.

Not too long ago, Santa Claus flew in to Dallas, Texas from Montreal, Quebec, Canada -- the same area where he persuaded MMA Referee of The Year, Herb Dean, to let the Georges St-Pierre-Josh Koscheck bout at UFC 124 continue on for one more round, even though Koscheck's right eye had seen better days.

He arrived at DFW Airport and took a taxi to my place in a suburb of Dallas, Texas, and because I can never break away from the Holiday spirit during Yuletide season, he allowed me a quick peek at what they wanted this year from Jolly Old Saint Nick.

Here's a little bit of what the big guy's list left me with.

Cruz's style is dazzling, who's going to beat him?

You can call him the "Decisionator," but damn Dominick Cruz is entertaining. Cruz won his eighth straight fight last night, with a unanimous decision blowout over Scott Jorgensen. He became the first UFC bantamweight champ by putting on a clinic in every area of the game.

Cruz (17-1) was impossible to hit. His counterstriking game was brilliant. The 5-foot-8, 135 pounder was tough to take down. When he did hit the floor, he popped up quickly. His combinations are some of the best we've ever seen in MMA. Jorgensen is a good fighter but he was made to look silly.

His style is completely unique. There are some good counterstrikers in MMA, and many more who are good defensive fighters, but Cruz's combination of the two is baffling opponents right now.

That's not a bad comparison to Lyoto Machida, but Cruz is a much better grappler than the former light heavyweight champ. Last night, when he wanted to take it to the ground, Cruz executed perfectly. Jorgensen is a former Div. 1 wrestler at Boise State and got dominated in clinch situations.

There's also a mental hurdle to overcome when you face Cruz. It's got to feel like he's clowning you in the cage. The opponent has to refrain from losing his cool.

The comparison to boxer Prince Naseem Hamed is interesting. He mocked opponents for years before getting torn apart by the very composed Marco Antonio Barrera. The Prince's success was part talent and part creative matchmaking.

Let's face it, Cruz has faced some pretty good opponents. Joe Benavidez is no slouch and Brian Bowles is an above average MMA striker.

Who has "real technique?" Does that even matter. Until you're in there and Cruz is bouncing all over the place and landing strikes from crazy angles, do you really know if a disciplined striking game will chop him down? Urijah Faber's striking has gotten better, can he do it? Miguel Torres is a good boxer, but he can get a little out of control too.

Joe Rogan once made the mistake of overreacting to Machida's win over Rashad Evans, saying we were on the verge of the "Machida Era." Are we making the same mistake here if we say this could be the "Cruz Era?" He's only 25 and seems to have it all.

Listen here to hear Cofield and Adam Hill from the Las Vegas Review-Journal on ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas as they talk about the victories by Cruz and Anthony Pettis.

Dan Hardy To Welcome Anthony Johnson Back To the UFC in March?

Fanhouse MMA reports that it's finally going to happen. After months of wondering where UFC Welterweight sensation and dangerous striking ace Anthony "Rumble" Johnson was and when he was going to come back to UFC action, we will finally see him in action for the first time since a UFC 106 loss to recent UFC Welterweight title challenger Josh Koscheck.

The stage will be Seattle, Washington, site of the UFC's Ultimate Fight Night 24, which will likely be headlined by a Light Heavyweight encounter between former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Tito Ortiz and former PRIDE Light Heavyweight slugger Antonio "Little Nog" Nogueira.

A battle of two dynamite-loaded strikers in one of the UFC's toughest divisions, Rumble must realize that he's not the only one looking to get himself back on track after a disappointing loss.

In The Outlaw's last outing, he suffered a devastating first round knockout loss to "The Natural Born Killer" Carlos Condit at UFC 120 in Hardy's home country of England.

Despite the loss, the second loss in a now two-fight losing streak after losing to Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre at UFC 111 last March, Hardy is still one of the division's most deadly strikers.

Rumble himself is no slouch on the striking as well, but this fight will be the first fight that Rumble's had in over a year—the fight with Koscheck happened last November—and Johnson hasn't been in action since, mostly due to a knee injury.

Much of the talk surrounding Johnson saw debate arise over whether Johnson—who fought Yoshiyuki Yoshida at a Catchweight of 176 pounds—would actually make the jump to Middleweight in his next fight.

Clearly, with his return to the cage and a bout against a former UFC Welterweight title contender looming, Anthony Johnson's future at Welterweight seems more certain than before.

Hopefully he'll make a return to form at UFC Fight Night 24.

Miller surprises Oliveira with first round sub at UFC 124

Charles Oliveira is a great prospect. The key word is prospect. The 21-year-old was facing a guy with seven UFC wins and a well-rounded game.

Oliveira took Miller lightly on the ground and paid for it.

The New Jersey-native, working from top control in a standing position, transitioned to an ankle lock. Oliveira didn't do much to extricate himself, and Miller cranked back with a kneebar. Oliveira tapped almost immediately giving Miller the win at 1:59 of the first round.

"When I stood up and the leg presented itself, I went for it," Miller said at the UFC 124 postfight press conference. "I really don't care where the fight ends up going. I started attacking the toe hold and he didn't worry about the knee."

Update - Miller split the Submission of the Night award with Mark Bocek and received $50,000 for his efforts.

Miller's appearance must fool people. At just 5-foot-7 with a red beard, he looks like the guy next door. There was heavy betting on Oliveira. By the time the fight went off, Miller was a plus-140 underdog in spite of entering the match with a six-fight win streak.

"Coming into the fight, I was trying to gain a little respect to be honest," Miller said. at the UFC 124 postfight press conference. "We went into that fight with him as the favorite, which I really didn't understand."

"He's got a big future ahead of him, but I knew I've fought a lot tougher guys than he has," Miller said. "I was trying to leave me mark and really get after him."

Even Dana White had his doubts about Miller's chances on the ground with Oliveira.

"When he went for that foot, me and (UFC owner Lorenzo) Fertitta looked at each other and said 'that was stupid.' Then he pulls off that kneebar," White laughed. "Goes to show you what we know. That why he fights and we don't."

Miller (19-2, 8-1 UFC) is a tough nut to crack. His only loss came against Gray Maynard, who is unbeaten in the UFC and challenging UFC lightweight champ Frank Edgar for the title next month.

Oliveira (14-1, 2-1 UFC) was the rage of the division after two dominant UFC wins since August.

Have a Listen to the Last Episode of The Bum Rush for 2010 with Special Guest George Sotiropoulos

With the holidays nearly upon us and your work week winding down, we figured we'd give you something to do while you drink your bourbon spiked coffee alone in your office today.

This is our twelfth and final episode of the year, but it's a good one.

Besides our "expert" breakdown of UFC 125, we opened the phone lines up again for this show to hear from the Potato Nation one last time before heading into 2011.

At approximately the :79 minute mark (for those of you who can't stand our hodgepodge of Canadian and American accents) UFC lightweight contender George Sotiropoulos stops by to talk about a number of topics, including his upcoming fight with Dennis Siver at UFC 127, the lightweight title bout between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard coming up on New Year's day, the hate towards 10th Planet jiu-jitsu and the controversy surrounding his competition legwear.

*We apologize in advance for a fragment of latent audio from a past episode that somehow made it into the intro by Ben when he's talking about our pal Dallas Winston. We're in the process of uploading the new version of the show with the soundbite removed, but it likely will take an hour or so to complete the process.

As always, we suggest that you subscribe to The Bum Rush on iTunes if for nothing else but simplicity's sake, but if you're still against all things Apple, you can download the episode by right-clicking HERE.
