Chael must battle Tito for the ?People?s Champ? moniker

Chael must battle Tito for the ?People?s Champ? moniker

After a busy summer, Tito Ortiz has had some time to think. That's not always a good thing with the loquacious former UFC light heavyweight champ.

Chael Sonnen recently stated that he's the "People's Champ," based on the fact that his loss against Anderson Silva at UFC 117 was less than legitimate. Now Ortiz wants a piece of that People's Champ pie.

"I showed that I'm able to compete against the best guys in the world, and I think that will help show people that if they believe in themselves, if they believe in their dream, they can accomplish anything," Ortiz said. "That's why I changed my name to 'The People's Champ.' I want everyone to know that I'm here for the fans. I want them to know that they can bounce back from anything.

In a video gaming story on ESPN.com, Ortiz pointed to a recent experience with fans as another reason for the name change.

"I signed over 15,000 autographs last weekend at the UFC fan expo," Ortiz tells me as we talk about his career resurgence, including a roster spot in the upcoming "UFC Undisputed 3" video game. "The first day I stood there for seven and a half hours. The second day I was there for over six hours. They had to kick me out. It was a lot of fun."

Based on his miracle win over Ryan Bader and fighting a heel in Rashad Evans at UFC 133, Ortiz did see a big transformation in his image. But is it enough, to make you call him the People's Champ? Or is there now a People's Champ for each weight division. I vote for Roy Nelson at heavyweight, Nick Diaz at 170, Melvin Guillard at 155

Is Sonnen falling back in the contender line? Camp Silva is now a fan of Bisping

Is Sonnen falling back in the contender line? Camp Silva is now a fan of BispingThe jockeying continues between Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva's camp. Will Sonnen's WWE-style call-out be rewarded or will Silva's manager Ed Soares successfully lobby UFC management that the brash American shouldn't be next?

Last week, Soares told HDNet's "Inside MMA" that Sonnen needs to go to the back of the line of middleweight contenders before he gets another title shot. Who's in that line?

Soares said he's never thought much of Michael Bisping in the past, but now the Brit should be in the mix for a title shot.

[...] People talk about Chael and Brian Stann, and sometimes people are focused on the TUF show. But I think Bisping could be a good opportunity. GSP could be a good opportunity," Soares told Sherdog.com.

That doesn't mean Soares is against Silva facing Sonnen.

"There's a lot of great opportunities, and I do think the Chael fight could potentially sell. It could be a big seller. I think it could be a huge pay-per-view. So I see all angles of it, but I'm just expressing what Anderson has talked to me about. That's how he feels."

Sonnen says all of this is irrelevant. He believes Silva is ducking him, but pointed out to Jim Rome that it's not the champ or his manager who make the fights.

"Whether he wants to do it or not, we're gonna do it. Dana will make him ... Anderson doesn't pick the fights and his manager, that keeps getting air time, darn sure doesn't have anything to do with it," Sonnen said (9:45 mark). "Dana White will decide, and if Dana says yes, then we're fighting and if Dana says no, then we're not. That's end of it. I don't argue with Dana. I don't need Anderson's opinion, I'll slap him in the face the next time I see him."

Does Bisping deserve a shot? He's certainly going to get some steam building as Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter" unfolds. The problem is timing.

Can the UFC wait until early December to schedule the next Silva fight? Bisping and fellow coach Jason Miller meet at the TUF 14 Finale on Dec. 3 in Las Vegas.

How Does Tim Kennedy Stack Up Against the UFC Middleweights?

Recently, there have been unconfirmed reports that Strikeforce middleweight fighter and Green Beret, Tim Kennedy, may be making his way over to the UFC.

Should these rumors prove to be true, Kennedy could cause a real stir up in the stagnant middleweight division.

With a professional record of 14-3, and victories over Robbie Lawler, Melvin Manhoef, Trevor Prangley and Jason "Mayhem" Miller, and a loss to Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Kennedy has certainly faced some top flight competition in his career.

So how would he stack up against the middleweight division in the UFC?

First we have to look at the current rankings of the division.

1. Anderson Silva
2. Chael Sonnen
3. Yushin Okami
4. Brian Stann
5. Vitor Belfort
6. Mark Munoz
7. Demian Maia
8. Michael Bisping
9. Chris Leben
10. Take Your Pick

Kennedy is a very well rounded fighter, and he stands a solid chance against anybody on that list.

He was able to go 25 minutes with Ronaldo Souza and not get submitted—although he did lose a decision—and he was able to go 15 minutes with Robbie Lawler and not get knocked out—in a fight which he won by unanimous decision.

Of Kennedy's 14 wins, five have been (T)KOs, and seven have been submissions.

I think Kennedy would have a real chance of being a top five middleweight in the UFC.

Aside from just being well rounded, Kennedy trains out of Jackson's. That gives him a big edge right there.

But that also means we wouldn't be likely to see the two military veterans face off, the other being Brian Stann.

Should Kennedy be making his way to the UFC, I think a matchup between the winner of the Michael Bisping-Mayhem Miller fight would be a good gauge to see where he stands in the division.

A fight against Bisping would be an easy sell for obvious reasons, and a fight with Mayhem would be the third fight between the two, as their record currently stands at 1-1 against each other.

Here's hoping they bring Kennedy—along with Ronaldo Souza and Luke Rockhold—over from Strikeforce soon.

The middleweight division needs a little shake up—Kennedy and the Strikeforce middleweights can provide that.

Select UFC Events to Air in 3D Theaters Next Year

Beginning next year, fans will be able to watch select UFC events in 3D theaters across the country.

The organization announced Thursday that it had partnered with digital theatrical distribution company Cinedigm Digital Cinema to deliver 3D broadcasts of its pay-per-view events, starting with its annual Super Bowl Weekend card on Feb. 4, 2012. According to the release, the 3D broadcast will be available in more than 120 theaters across the country and will be the first of four of its kind next year.

"By partnering with Cinedigm, we're taking the UFC viewing experience to a whole new level," UFC President Dana White stated. "For the first time ever, fight fans can watch a UFC Pay-Per-View card in 3D at theaters across the country. We want UFC fans to have the best viewing experience possible and now they get a chance to experience major UFC Pay-Per-Views in 3D."

The UFC's first-ever 3D broadcast was UFC Live on Versus 3 in March, however, it was only available on television.

The Super Bowl Weekend card has yet to be announced, but middleweight contender Chael Sonnen has pushed for his rematch with Anderson Silva to take place that weekend.

UFC 137 interview: Mitrione wants to show he?s more than a heavy-handed striker

Next week at UFC 137, Matt Mitrione is back and he's facing his toughest test to date.

The former Big 10 defensive tackle and NFL veteran, has raced out to a 5-0 start, but now he faces another big puncher in Cheick Kongo. Mitrione doesn't sound like he's afraid to bang with the Frenchman, but also pointed out that he's been working on his ground game as well.

Listen to a very confident Mitrione with Kevin Iole and myself on ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM's "The MMA Insiders" show. You'll be shocked to find out who "Meathead" from Season 9 of the "Ultimate Fighter" is training with now.

Diego Brandao Talks About His Fight: 'I Want to Destroy the Guy'

Diego BrandaoOn this week's episode of The Ultimate Fighter, Diego Brandao had a run-in with Steven Siler outside the Octagon, then found out that Siler would be his next opponent inside the Octagon as well.

Brandao and Siler were the last two fighters to get matched up in this season's featherweight tournament, and their fight will be shown on next week's episode. MMAFighting.com caught up with Brandao to discuss his feelings toward Siler outside the cage, his views on what kind of opponent Siler would be and how he prepared for the fight.

Our interview with Brandao is below.

Michael David Smith: At the start of Episode 5 they showed you being very angry at Steven Siler. What was that all about?
Well, I think the show wanted to show the drama, but he got in my face and challenged me and I was just like, "Why are you getting in my face?" You guys saw me punching the wall which made me look crazy, but I was just totally focused on beating everyone. In that house there were a lot of young kids, a lot of them were talented but a lot of them didn't know what to do with that opportunity. I knew I had to be focused on my opportunity to beat all of them.

So when you found out that you'd be fighting Siler in the cage, did the run-in with him motivate you?
No, because inside the cage it's different. Inside the cage, I'll throw down with anyone. I don't have anything to lose. I'm going out there like a pit bull.

Going into the fight, how did you think you matched up with Siler?
I think he thought he could beat me, but I'm a black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu, and I also thought I could knock him out. I was feeling very good.

As you prepared for the fight did you develop a specific game plan for Siler?
No, before the fight I don't have a strategy like, "Oh, I have to take this guy down, I have to do this, I have to do that." To me, I don't care. I go in there and I want to destroy the guy. I don't want to think too much. I go in there, make sure my hands are up and fight hard. When you push it you win the fight.

It sounds like you were confident heading into the fight.
That's just my training. I train real hard. I'm not there in the house to make friends. The guy made me angry but I'm a nice guy, a happy guy. I just wanted to go in there and show I'm the best. It's 32 guys fighting for one contract so I'm not in it to be friends with anybody.

Check MMAFighting.com next week when we check in with Brandao following the airing of his fight with Siler.

Brandon Vera Calls Thiago Silva a 'Juice Monkey'

On the one hand, UFC light heavyweight Brandon Vera owes Thiago Silva, the man who beat him at UFC 125 in January, a debt of gratitude. That's because had Silva not tested positive for steroids following the fight, Vera knows he would be looking for work outside the UFC.

"Stuff happens in weird ways," Vera said on Monday's episode of The MMA Hour. "For sure this was a blessing in disguise. So whether it came from up top or karma was just like, 'Look, man, he's been through enough. Let's give him one. Let's see what he does with it.' Either way, I'm running with it."

On the other hand, Vera has no problem expressing how he really feels about Silva, who celebrated in the cage en route to beating "The Truth" via unanimous decision on Jan. 1.

"I think he was just celebrating, but now that I know that he was a juice monkey, for sure, I think he's a piece of sh**."

Following the fight, the UFC released Vera, who had just dropped to 0-3 in his last three fights. But after news broke that Silva had been suspended for a year by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for testing positive for steroids and providing a fake urine sample, the organization gave Vera his job back. He'll get another shot to realize his UFC dreams next weekend when he meets Eliot Marshall at UFC 137.

"I was still bewildered the whole time wondering why I looked so bad," Vera said of his fight against Silva. "But then when the test came back, I understood why, man.

"The whole fight I just kept asking myself, 'What the hell is going on? Why is this?' You know, I train with Phil Davis, 'Hapa' Travis Browne, the Nogueira brothers and Junior dos Santos. I train with some big dudes, man. Nobody has ever been able to hold me. The whole time during the fight, while we're on the ground, I'm just thinking to myself, 'What is going? Why is it like this?' And it just wore on me the whole time. On the feet, I was happy as hell. I was smiling the whole damn time. He's so slow, but then as soon as we hit the deck, it just felt like I was a little child."

Vera says he hasn't talked to Silva after the fight, and he has no intention of reaching out to him any time soon.

"No interest at all," he said. "Not till I smack him in his face again."

Jeff Curran Says It's 'Put Up or Shut Up' Time in His Return at UFC 137

It's been an interesting road, but after nearly eight years, Jeff Curran is back in the UFC.

Curran will return to the promotion at UFC 137 next week against former bantamweight title challenger Scott Jorgensen in Las Vegas in a bout that was moved to the main pay-per-view card on Friday. It's another shot with Zuffa and the UFC that Curran said he begged for, and a fight against a top contender that he jumped at the chance to get.

On Monday's edition of "The MMA Hour," Curran told host Ariel Helwani that he's always been physically ready - but now he believes he's more mentally ready than he ever was before and it's time to "put up or shut up."

"Everything's going great," Curran said. "It's kind of like I knew where I need to be to be able to focus on my fighting, and (the past personal problems) seem like such a long way away sometimes. Everything is revamped and going smoothly in my personal life, everything's going smoothly in my gym, and I couldn't ask for a better situation."

Curran (33-13-1) took a short-notice fight against future UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra at UFC 46 in January 2004. He lost a unanimous decision, but went on to a nine-fight winning streak outside the promotion. After a loss in his lone fight for Pride, the Illinois-based fighter went on another winning streak, one that got him a shot at the WEC not long after it had been purchased by Zuffa.

After a win in his first fight for the promotion since WEC 4, Curran got a shot at featherweight champion Urijah Faber and was submitted in the second round. He said that loss started a domino effect for him, mentally, and after four straight losses - all to WEC champions or title challengers - he was cut by the WEC in August 2009.

"Physically, I was prepared as ever for all my fights in the WEC," Curran said. "For Urijah, I just got caught. After that, it was a spiral in my mental focus. I don't know what made them turn the table and give me (another) opportunity. But at this point, it doesn't really matter. I've got to get out there and prove myself."

Curran has won four of five fights since his last loss in the WEC, a split decision loss to Takeya Mizugaki. His one loss in that stretch came in a Bellator event in Chicago, not far from the gym he runs in the city's northern suburbs that is the training home to the likes of former UFC lightweight champ Jens Pulver and UFC featherweight Bart Palaszewski, who also will fight at UFC 137.

But Curran said even at the Bellator fight, in April 2010, he wasn't where he needed to be mentally for Bryan Goldsby, who beat him in a unanimous decision. He said there had been a temptation to sit back and wait for the WEC to call (before it merged with the UFC), since matchmaker Sean Shelby had said they might have a fight for Curran later in the year.

WIth his cousin Pat making his Bellator debut on the same show - the start of what would be his improbable run through the lightweight tournament to a $100,000 pay day and an eventual shot at Bellator lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez - Curran said he felt pressure to take the fight, even though he wanted to pull out.

"We decided I needed to make some money - I was having some financial problems," Curran said. "And part of getting Pat into the lightweight tournament was having both cousins on the same show in Chicago. I kinda stepped in and took one for the team, even though I tried to pull out of the fight. I just didn't want to make up a lie. I was asking to be released and they wouldn't' do it because I was the main event in Chicago. I was going to pull an injury card, but I didn't. So I just went forward with it. That's one fight I regret taking - not that Goldsby didn't earn the win."

Even two wins in his own XFO promotion after the loss to Goldsby had him unsure what his next step might be. He beat Billy Vaughan in May, but said that a loss to him likely would have meant his retirement from the sport.

"I was training hard, I was in great shape," Curran said. "I thought if I can't beat these guys, nothing against them, I don't deserve to be in the UFC. I thought I needed to finish Billy Vaughan to get back in the UFC, but I think that was enough for them to say, 'Jeff looked good, he was back meaning business.'"

And now that he's back, fighting at bantamweight where he believes he has his best shot instead of featherweight or lightweight, Curran said he has to take advantage of what might be his last opportunity in the world's biggest promotion.

"I think about it every second of the day," Curran said. "I was just at a Keith Urban concert and there were 20,000 people there, and I just sat there with chills and thought, 'The pressure.' I'm not intimidated by it. I've been in all the big shows. But what it all encompasses is that I finally fought my way back, and it's either put up or shut up - embarrass myself or get out there and do my thing."

Brad Tavares vs. Dustin Jacoby Promoted to UFC 137 Pay-Per-View

A main card slot on the UFC 137 pay-per-view opened up following Tuesday's news that Georges St-Pierre had withdrawn from the main event due to a knee injury, and as a result, the UFC promoted the Brad Tavares vs. Dustin Jacoby middleweight fight to the PPV telecast. The promotion confirmed the news via UFC.com late Tuesday night.

The Tavares-Jacoby tilt will join BJ Penn vs. Nick Diaz, Matt Mitrione vs. Cheick Kongo, Roy Nelson vs. Mirko Cro Cop and Hatsu Hioki vs. George Roop on the PPV, which will air live from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on Oct. 29.

More Coverage: UFC 137 Fight Card

Tavares (7-1) is looking to rebound from his first professional loss to Aaron Simpson at UFC 132 in July. Prior to the loss, Tavares, a cast member on TUF 11, had gone 2-0 inside the Octagon.

Jacoby (6-0), who replaced the injured Tim Credeur earlier this month, will be making his UFC debut next week. The former college football player made his MMA debut last November and has finished all six of his opponents.

Massenzio goes unconventional route to smash Cantwell; Simpson, Elkins and Miocic also undercard winners at UFC 136

Massenzio goes unconventional route to smash Cantwell; Simpson, Elkins and Miocic also undercard winners at UFC 136

HOUSTON - Mike Massenzio is a wrestler by trade, but when his takedown game didn't produce results the New Jersey-native made it into a street fight. Massenzio consistently landed uppercuts and straight lefts to brutalize Steve Cantwell on his way to a unanimous decision victory, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28, in the first fight at UFC 136.

Massenzio (12-5, 2-3 UFC) has been a loyal soldier for the UFC. He was called in on short notice for his last fight against Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 131. Massenzio was out of his league at light heavyweight. Tonight, at his more natural 185 pounds, he was the better conditioned and tougher fighter.

Cantwell's stand up is very good and he looked to be on his way to a victory at the end of the first round. Massenzio was getting caught by body shots and backing up. In the second, everything changed. Massenzio worked consistently for the takedown. None of them worked, but it wore down Cantwell.

In the final seven minutes of the fight, Cantwell had his nose broken and started dropping his hands.

Simpson dominates Schafer on the way to his sixth UFC victory

Aaron Simpson doesn't have to fight, he simply loves doing so. It doesn't hurt that the 37-year-old, is still a physical specimen. Eric Schafer simply couldn't keep pace with Simpson tonight. The former Arizona State wrestling star stood with Schafer for 15 minutes and tore him up to score a unanimous decision victory, 30-27 on all cards, at the Toyota Center.

Simpson (11-2, 6-2 UFC) has a decorated amateur wrestling background, but his hands have improved vastly. Schafer's big strength is his submission game, so Simpson decided to slug it out. It worked. He had Schafer rocked on several occasions and dropped him in the final 15 seconds of the second round.

Massenzio goes unconventional route to smash Cantwell; Simpson, Elkins and Miocic also undercard winners at UFC 136

Elkins thwarts Zhang guillotine attempts to pick up easy win

Tiequan Zhang's guillotine is dangerous, but tonight it was the only thing he tried. Darren Elkins survived a submission attempt at the start of each round, gained top control and dominated his opponent on the ground for a unanimous decision victory, 30-26, 30-27 and 30-27.

Zhang, the only high level Chinese fighter working under the Zuffa banner, now has a 2-2 record with the company. The UFC is looking to break new ground in China and would love to market some Chinese fighters. It's probably safe to assume there will be dozens of Chinese fighters in the near future, but right now Zhang (15-2, 1-1 UFC) doesn't look like the guy to carry the banner.

Elkins (13-2, 3-1 UFC) fought twice for the UFC at lightweight. After a loss to Charles Oliveira, he dropped to 145, where he's now 2-0.

Miocic outlasts Beltran to get first UFC victory

Joey Beltran is no easy mark so Stipe Miocic knew it was going to be a grind to get a victory in his first UFC fight. Miocic landed some bombs and scored five easy takedowns on the way to a unanimous decision victory, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28, in the final fight of the UFC 136 undercard on Facebook.

Bellator 54 recap: Vianna destroys Baker, Makovsky cruises past Roberts

Alexander Shlemenko battled through an absolute slugfest to advance to the Bellator middleweight tournament finals, but he'll have a beast awaiting him. Right before Shlemenko finished off Brian Rogers, Vitor Vianna sent a resounding message by running over Bryan Baker with a first round TKO finish at Bellator 54 in Atlantic City.

Vianna (13-1-1), who trains at Wanderlei Silva's Wand Fight Team in Las Vegas, decided to stand and bang with Baker. The jiu-jitsu ace showed he has thunder in his hands.

Vianna floored Baker with a well-placed right hook to the temple. Once Baker went down, Vianna sat on Baker, who was trapped along the cage, and punched away before the referee stopped things. The Brazilian actually caught a break. When Baker was on his hands and knees, Vianna nearly connected with an illegal soccer kick to the face.

Bellator 135-pound champion Zack Makovsky rolled in a non-title fight against UFC veteran Ryan Roberts. Frankly, Roberts looked a bit amateurish in being taken down twice by Makovsky using a low-single leg takedown. Once on the ground, Makovsky easily passed guard to side control. The second time, Makovsky quickly transitioned to slap on a north-south choke. The champ will now wait to see what happens in Bellator's bantamweight tournament.

Next week at Bellator 55 in Yuma, Az., 40-year-old Alexis Vila will try to continue his amazing run. The former Cuban Olympian will face Marcos Galvao. Ed West, a finalist in last year's 135-pound tourney faces Eduardo Duntas in the other semifinal. The winner of the tournament gets a title shot against Makovsky.

Hershman?s exit from Showtime could mean the network gets out of the MMA business

Showtime is facing a major decision about its future with Strikeforce. Now it has to make the decision without the guy who's steered the ship since 2003. Hershman left his position as executive vice president and general manager for sports and event programming with Showtime for the president's gig with HBO Sports.

What does that mean for the future of mixed martial arts at Showtime? It seems like Strikeforce is on its last legs. Who will take Hershman's position and will they have an interest in the MMA business if it's not the UFC? Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole gives us the lowdown on what the future holds for Showtime, and HBO.

Iole also gave us his take on what happens on the boxing side with Hershman at HBO.

Anderson Silva and the Most Exciting Fighter to Watch in Each UFC Weight Class

Fans tune in to see great fights.

It seems like an obvious statement, but sometimes it gets lost when guys like Chael Sonnen and Nick Diaz cause drama in the media with their actions and words outside of the Octagon.

It’s not that we don’t enjoy what they do, but as Dana White once said

“People aren’t paying $50 to listen to Chael Sonnen talk for 25 minutes.”

While some guys have put on lackluster fights and still gotten a ton of PPV buys, for the most part, fans tune in to be entertained, and most of them have certain fighters they feel that they can turn to when they want to see an awesome fight.

Some of these guys dominate their opponents and leave fans staring in awe at how good they are, while others go out there and get into war after war with no regard to their own safety, possibly amazing fans even more.

Every division has a few guys that fans will make sure they watch no matter what, and I’ve tried to single out the best of those fighters here.

One quick note: I wanted to avoid putting a bunch of champions and well-known fighters on here, so if it was close, I deferred to the lesser-known fighter.

Lesnar shocker! UFC star agrees to new deal with the WWE

This is no way to make those nasty rumors go away. Brock Lesnar, who's been long rumored to be interested in a possible return to the world of fake fighting, just agreed to be one of the primary character in the WWE's new video game. According to TMZ:

After SEVEN YEARS apart, UFC pain machine Brock Lesnar is getting back into business with the company that put him on the map -- WWE -- in a deal that will make him the "featured star" in a brand new video game.

Multiple sources confirm ...the people developing "WWE: 12" approached Brock back in January and asked for permission to use his name and likeness in the game and the advertising campaign.

On Wednesday, UFC president Dana White explained why he was fine with the new deal for Lesnar.

Lesnar's long term future is truly a fight-by-fight proposition in MMA. He's battled diverticulitis over the last 18 months.

The former WWE star is scheduled to face Alistair Overeem on Dec. 30. If he loses, who knows? From the UFC's standpoint if the wrestling game further promotes Lesnar, it certainly can't hurt pay-per-view sales for his MMA bouts.

UFC 136 weigh-in: Edgar wants to curb ?The Bully?

UFC 136 weigh-in: Edgar wants to curb ?The Bully?

Have you made your pick on tomorrow's lightweight title fight? It sounds like everyone is split on the third fight between UFC champ Frank Edgar and Gray Maynard. Even the crowd equally booed the two fighters at the Toyota Center.

They both made weight easily. Maynard, trailed by diet guru Mike Dolce, was absolutely shredded. He'll be the bigger man in the cage at UFC 136. Edgar walks around at 162 while Maynard could be 170-plus by the time the introductions are made tomorrow night around 10 p.m. CT.

On stage, Edgar said he's sick of the "kid" and wants to curb "The Bully."

UFC 136 weigh-in: Edgar wants to curb ?The Bully? The crowd was fired up over this very deep card. The pay-per-view also features a second title fight as UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo defends against Kenny Florian. The 5-foot-10 Florian looked incredibly skinny on the scales at 145.

This is his second fight at the weight so he should be acclimated. It's his third shot at a UFC title.

"This is the fight that brought me to 145. I've trained too hard and suffered too much to not come away with the title tomorrow night," Florian told UFC analyst Joe Rogan.

The co-main events are both Fight of the Night candidates, but they'll have competition from Leonard Garcia-Nam Phan, Melvin Guillard-Joe Lauzon and Anthony Pettis-Jeremy Stephens. Pettis and Stephens had the most intense staredown during the weigh-in.

UFC 136 weigh-in: Edgar wants to curb ?The Bully?

The only intense moments beyond that, were the weigh-ins by Tiequan Zhang and Brian Stann. They both came in a half-pound heavy and both dropped their drawers to make weight successfully.

UFC: Is There Inconsistency in Releasing Fighters?

Mixed martial arts is the fastest growing sport in the world and continues to grow each day. With so many fighters that are up-and-coming, it is difficult to remain in the spotlight.

The UFC has been the forefront of growth of MMA, and to many, represents the majority of what people view as the sport. The UFC boasts some of the greatest talent there is in MMA, but not without its own boundaries.

With so many fighters out there, only the select few can make it, and more importantly, remain in the UFC.

This concept applies to all other sports and organizations, but the UFC is the biggest, so that is the focus. Led by President Dana White and the Fertitta brothers, the UFC has grown exponentially each year. But with much success and attention comes inevitable flaws.

The UFC is notorious for cutting fighters following a series of losses. Typically, the trend has been the “three strikes and you’re out” sort of setup. But this is not always the case.

Some fighters have been cut after one loss; some after two. On the other hand, there are fighters that can go four or five losses and not get cut. Due to limited roster space and limited resources, cuts are certain to happen, but the inconsistency is confusing at times for fans.

But what factors affect who gets cut and when?

A lot seems to do with business moves as time has gone on. One significant factor that seems to be in the mix is a fighter’s nationality. Where they come from can be argued as to why some guys have been let go and why some have stuck around.

Take Dan Hardy for example. Hardy has lost four fights in a row, two of them being by a finish. Typically, by the norm, Hardy should have been cut after his loss to Anthony Johnson, but the UFC kept him around. Dana White went to the media, who were curious if the “The Outlaw” was on the chopping block, and once again after his loss to Chris Lytle. White responded that they would keep him since he always “comes to fight.”

This is a legitimate reason to hold onto someone, in an organization built on the backs of fighters who “came to fight.” However, guys like John Howard who are finishers and come ready to give a good fight, get cut right after the third.

When this situation happens, fans tend to converse over why this happens. It makes sense when you take into consideration what else the fighter brings to the organization besides his skills and technique.

Dan Hardy is one of two huge British ambassadors for the sport; the other being Michael Bisping. England has a strong MMA fanbase and therefore provides a huge business angle for the UFC and MMA in general. Certain guys like Hardy seem to be untouchable, unless they do something in violation with conduct. Bisping is in the same boat, and if he were to lose four in a row, the UFC probably wouldn’t cut him.

Look at it this way. If Georges St. Pierre lost four in a row, would the UFC cut him?

Most likely not, since he is not only a huge star in America, but is the leading fighter to come out of Canada. Canada is known to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, fanbase of MMA in North America. Cutting him would hurt financially to them, largely due to his nationality. If it were any other fighter, four losses would be rather impossible to recover from.

Another individual in this situation is Yoshihiro Akiyama. Akiyama made his UFC debut at UFC 100 and won a controversial decision over Alan Belcher. He then went on to lose three in a row, yet he still is competing and contracted with the UFC. Given two of his losses were “fight of the night” material, it still doesn’t take away the loss in the end of the day.

Early 2012, the UFC is going to Japan and would love to carry with it one of the biggest stars to come out of Asia. Akiyama brings a crowd and would certainly have a huge fanbase at an UFC event in Asian territory. Akiyama has expressed desires to move to Welterweight, and this move helps lessen the burden of three losses. However, it may be correct to say his race is helping him stay in the UFC.

Does nationality play a part? If so, how significant?

While nationality may or may not play a significant role, there does seem to be this luminous ambiguity of what constitutes “cutting” criteria. Sometimes it seems based on how they lose, sometimes on what they have done for the sport. Sometimes it seems guys get cut solely because they lost X fights in a row. But if you look at Tito Ortiz, it contradicts some of them.

Tito has done great things for the sport, but had he been held to the standard some of these others have faced, he would have been gone a long time ago. Keith Jardine is a tough fighter who is interesting to watch, but he hit the four and then was released.

The true nature of why these guys are getting released when they are is unknown, but it is apparent there is a lack of system. This is where fans find frustration and where the organization starts to look more like a business than a sport.

So far, their decisions do not have huge impacts on the sport, but it would be nice to have some consistency of when fighters get released. In the end of the day, it is their organization, and they can do whatever they want, but it makes us all curious.

Sometimes fighters get cut for substance abuse or taking PED’s. But there is inconsistency there are well. Thiago Silva used a urine adulterant in his drug test for UFC 125, and no note of his release from the UFC has surfaced. As far as information goes, he was fined and his win overturned, but still remains contracted with the UFC.

But then, look at cases such as Nate Marquardt. Nate had failed medical requirements, and almost as soon as fans heard about this, he was released from the UFC. Once again, another case which shows that each fighter case is situational and inconsistent throughout.

Fans have different views and responses when fighters get cut, but regardless, the UFC and MMA is thriving. Many have expressed that a system would be nice to have, but we may not see that anytime soon. Until then, everyone can make up their own lists as to what they think matters in the “cutting” decisions.

What kind of system would you like to see? What are your thoughts?

Maia takes grappling-filled decision over Santiago at UFC 136

Maia takes grappling-filled decision over Santiago at UFC 136

Demian Maia took a grappling-filled decision from Jorge Santiago at UFC 136 in Houston on Saturday night. Though the judges gave Maia the 30-27 win on all of their cards, he did little to finish the fight.

The two submission specialists swung for the fences early in the fight, landing kicks and punchers until Maia got a takedown. In the past, that means the end of the fight for Maia, but Santiago was able to defend and push Maia off of him. Later in the round, Santiago threw a flying knee, but that just opened him up for a takedown. Maia controlled Santiago on the ground for the rest of the round.

Santiago kept Maia at bay for much of the second with better striking, but Maia still got a takedown halfway through the round. Again, Santiago was able to defend and hold off Maia's attempts to pass guard, but couldn't get out from the bottom position.

To start off the third, Santiago defended a Maia takedown attempt. As Santiago's corner screamed for him to be more aggressive, Santiago was taken down again. For the rest of the round, Maia was in control, throwing elbows and short punches, but not doing anything to finish the fight.

Maia has world-class BJJ credentials, and has the reputation of being a submission whiz. However, his last submission win came over Chael Sonnen at UFC 95. With the win over Santiago, Maia's record moves to 15-3. Santiago, who is in his second stint with the UFC, has lost two in a row. His overall record is now 23-10.

Wisconsin Bill Proposes Ban on MMA

According to USCombatsports.com, lawmakers in the Sstate of Wisconsin have put forth a bill that effectively outlaws the sport of mixed martial arts in the state.

Assembly Bill 308 seeks to give state officials the power to ban mixed marital arts in all jurisdictions. It would allow all towns throughout the whole state to enforce the ordinance to anyone to participates in, operates, maintains, attends or promotes a mixed martial arts event or promotion.

In November of 2009, an event that was promoted under the promotion Wisconsin Fighting Championship and was set to take place at the Washington County Fairgrounds in the Town of Polk was cancelled.

In 2010, the Town of Polk enacted an ordinance stating that, “No person shall operate, maintain, attend, participate in, promote or assist in operating, maintaining, attending, participating in or promoting an ultimate or extreme event held within the Town of Polk.”

Assembly Bill 308 is now set to be reviewed by the Assembly Committee on Homeland Security and State Affairs.

More on this story as it develops.

Phan wins thrilling UFC 136 decision over Garcia

Nam Phan took an electrifying decision over Leonard Garcia at UFC 136 in Houston on Saturday night. Neither fighter let up for one second during the fight. On all three judges card, Phan won 29-28.

Phan got the edge early, teeing off on Garcia then knocking him down. Phan quickly moved into Garcia's guard, but after the referee didn't see enough action, he stood them up. Phan wobbled Garcia, and then defended one of his takedowns. Phan used body shots to create damage, and kept Garcia on his heels. In the final seconds of the round, Phan had one more onslaught to knock Garcia down again.

Garcia became more wild in the second round, winging big strikes that didn't go anywhere near Phan's face. Phan used short, fast punches to Garcia's face and body throughout the round. As the round wore on, Garcia began to tire, and a cut opened underneath his eye.

Between rounds, Phan said, "Let's touch gloves," to Garcia, who laughed and called Phan a word not fit for Cagewriter.

The first minute of the third round followed the same script that the rest of the fight had followed until Garcia knocked Phan down. He quickly got back to his feet, but Garcia teed off, swinging for the fences on every punch. They clinched, which slowed down the pace, but not for long. Phan took Garcia down, but the ref stood them up.

In the final minute, Garcia threw spinning backfists, swinging hooks, and every punch in the book. With less then 30 seconds left, Garcia tried for an unsuccessful takedown. As the round ended, the two swung wildly until the final horn ended, causing the crowd at the Toyota Center to erupt in cheers.

"I knew I had him in trouble. He had gathered so many points in the beginning. I knew I had to finish him," Garcia said after the bout.

This is a rematch of their December bout, which Garcia won by a controversial decision. Phan appeared to be the clear-cut winner in that bout, and was angry about the loss. He said he didn't want to fight Garcia a third time, but Garcia said he would be up for it if it were in Houston.

50 Greatest MMA Fighters of All Time: Does Anderson Silva Top the List?

It takes a lot to be considered one of the greatest of all time in anything, but in a sport like MMA, you need both talent and luck on your side.

Fedor Emelianenko went almost 10 full years without a loss, but has suffered three in a row.

Anderson Silva has looked unbeatable for almost six years, but he still has a few losses from early in his career.

Hell, once upon a time Matt Serra won a reality show and took out Georges St-Pierre.

My point is the sport changes too quickly and is too unpredictable for anyone to be perfect. While none of the fighters on this list are perfect, they are the best this young sport has given us.

As always with a list like this, some of you will disagree to the point where you want to beat me to death, but instead, please just leave a comment.

UFC 137: 5 Reasons Why a Georges St-Pierre Loss Is a Good Thing for the UFC

Georges St-Pierre has been the UFC Welterweight kingpin for quite some time. GSP's last loss occurred in 2007 in one of the biggest upsets in UFC history.

St-Pierre admitted he was not focused on his training and would vow to reclaim his title. After running through Matt Serra to get his  belt back, GSP began a run of dominance that has landed the Canadian at the No. 2 Pound for Pound list in MMA.

Since then, GSP has become one of the UFC's top PPV draws as well. He's also signed endorsement deals with companies outside the MMA market such as Gatorade and Under Armour.

So why should the UFC be hoping for a Carlos Condit upset on Oct. 29?

Fighter injured in car accident on way to his bout

Din Thomas' luck ran out before he even got to his fight on Friday night. The UFC veteran was scheduled to fight in the main event in a Florida promotion, and was injured in a car accident on the way to the bout. Howard Davis Jr., both the fight's promoter and Thomas' boxing coach at American Top Team, gave an update on Thomas' condition.

"I just got some information from one of his trainers, and he stated that Din is a little banged up," Davis said. "His ribs might be broken, his arm hurts and his head is a little banged up. (But) they said that he should be OK."

The sad part of this is Thomas was trying for a comeback after not fighting since January of 2010. He has nine fights in the UFC and was on the fourth season of "The Ultimate Fighter," and has wins over Clay Guida and Jeremy Stephens. Thankfully, his injuries are not serious, just poorly-timed.

Thanks to MMA Fighting.
