UFC 138 Fight Card: Will Thiago Alves Ever Get Back into the Title Picture?

At UFC 138, Thiago Alves will face off against UFC newcomer Papy Abedi, who has yet to be defeated in his MMA career.

Alves has had an inconsistent career within the UFC. While he did put up a seven-fight win streak before losing in a welterweight title match with current champ Georges St-Pierre, Alves has had trouble both before that fight and after.

Since his loss to St-Pierre, Alves has gone 1-2 and failed to make weight when he faced off against Jon Fitch.

Will Alves ever get back into the title picture? Probably not.

Don’t get me wrong, he is a very exciting fighter to watch. However, he appears to have some trouble keeping his house in order.

Earlier in his career, Alves also failed to make weight when he faced off against Matt Hughes. Even before that, he had tested positive for banned diuretics.

Before Alves can once again get back into title contention, he first needs to put together a good win streak.

Should we expect that? Not really.

Since his loss to GSP, Alves has given us no reason to believe that he’s come back stronger and better prepared.

Sure, he looked great in his win over John Howard. However, before that, he failed to make weight against Fitch. Following his fight with Howard, "The Pitbull" then lost to Rick Story.

Alves needs to have some consistency in his career before we can once again get behind him. Some people have talked about a move up to middleweight, but he’d be the shortest fighter in the division at 5'9".

While Alves is a great fighter and lots of fun to watch, we need to see more from him before we can talk about him getting another shot at the title.
