Leading up to UFC 128 this weekend in Newark, New Jersey, UFC President Dana White held a press conference at the famous "Radio City Music Hall" in New York City.
The event was open to the media and public.
Apart from discussing UFC 128, the conference also served as a rallying event for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) legalization in New York.
White and fellow UFC supporters are baffled as to why New York is so late to join the MMA contingent.
According to White, any concerns over the safety of the sport are ridiculous. He claims that MMA is safer than professional football and hockey, both of which are legal in New York.
White says that MMA is "the most regulated sport in the world."
His main point on safety was in regards to concussions.
When players in the NHL or NFL receive head injuries, they sometimes continue to play in that game, furthering their risk of harm.
When an MMA fighter receives a concussion, the referee steps in and ends the fight, preventing any further damage.
Also to that point, when a fighter receives a concussion, he is suspended for three months and must still be cleared by a doctor.
"Players in the NFL and NHL can't miss three months or there would be no NFL or NHL."
Sounds like a pretty solid point.
It should be only a matter of time before mixed martial arts is legalized in New York, and the UFC finds its way into Madison Square Garden.
