With Urijah Faber’s Bantamweight debut just weeks away the UFC brass is hoping and praying that he can pull a win over former number one bantamweight contender Takeya Mizugaki.
Urijah Faber is easily the biggest name and most marketable figure right now in the WEC's Bantamweight Division. Urijah is the face of Amp Energy Drink and now one of the poster boys of the new K-Swiss ads with HBO star Kenny Powers (Danny McBride) from Eastbound & Down.
Urijah would add numerous storylines into the Bantamweight Division and would create the most marketable and biggest fights possible for the division.
If Urijah Faber can overcome Takeya Mizugaki at WEC 52 in November and Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz can hold off and retain his title over number one contender Scott Jorgensen at WEC 53, the last ever WEC event in December then the UFC would have a huge storyline setting up the first ever UFC Bantamweight title defense.
Urijah Faber is the only man to have beaten WEC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz when Cruz fought at 145 and challenged Faber for his then Featherweight title. Dominick Cruz would already have two title defenses by then—one over Joseph Benavidez, Urijah Faber’s protégé—and Scott Jorgensen and would have clearly established himself as the best Bantamweight fighter in the world.
This time around, Faber would be stepping into Cruz’s division and would be trying to take away his title. The UFC could play off these storylines and set up a mega first title defense for the UFC Bantamweight title and introduce the casual fight fans to the Bantamweight division.
If Urijah Faber was victorious over Dominick Cruz and were to win the UFC Bantamweight title, then the UFC and Dana White could set up the mega fight that all MMA hardcore fans have been craving about for years. Urijah Faber versus Miguel Torres for the UFC Bantamweight Title.
The UFC would be putting together the WEC’s longest reigning Featherweight Champion versus the WEC’s longest reigning Bantamweight Champion. I am getting excited just thinking about it just like most of you probably are.
The UFC wants to create a big buzz with the lighter divisions and make them marketable to the casual fans and it all starts at WEC 52 on November 11 in Las Vegas with Urijah Faber beating Takeya Mizugaki.
