Former UFC interim heavyweight champion Shane Carwin is recovering from successful back surgery. Expected recovery time is between eight and 12 weeks with rehabilitation.
The procedure was done to alleviate pain that Carwin had been experiencing for a few years now that was not decreasing with therapy.
The pain was due to scar tissue building up in his cervical (neck) vertebrae and putting pressure on the nerve. Carwin's surgeon reported that the nerve damage was worse than previously diagnosed.
Carwin posted on Twitter following the surgery that "I'm Alive" and to thank his fans for their support.
No timetable has been set for his return to the cage. Carwin was set to fight Roy Nelson at UFC 125 but had to pull out of that fight due to the back surgery. Carwin last fought at UFC 116 against Brock Lesnar for the UFC Heavyweight championship. He lost in the second round due to an arm triangle choke after dominating Lesnar in the first round.
