Demian Maia spoke to GracieFighter.com recently and revealed that the Ultimate Fighting Championship is looking for his next fight to be against Michael Bisping.
“They say they want to put me against Michael Bisping. But I’m not concerned with any of that. I’m a fighter and I have to train as best I can, to win,” Maia said. “He’s a very strategic guy, keeps his distance, and has good boxing. He’s also a pain to take down. A lot of people say they don’t think he’s all that, but he has very few losses and is hard to beat. He’s an experienced fighter. Should he really be my next fight then I’ll even ask for some pointers from Wanderlei Silva, who has fought him before.”
Maia defeated Kendall Grove via unanimous decision on Saturday December 4 at “The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale” event. The win was Maia’s second in a row since his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi in April of this year.
Maia’s only other loss in his mixed martial arts career was a 21 second knockout loss to Nate Marquardt in August of 2009.
Bisping is currently scheduled to fight Jorge Rivera at UFC 127 in Australia. That event is booked for February 27, 2011.
Maia did not elaborate on when and where the UFC was looking to book his fight with Bisping, so it is not known if the UFC is looking to replace Rivera with Maia or if this is a fight that will happen somewhere down the road.
