Florian still a bridesmaid as Aldo defends belt at UFC 136

Florian still a bridesmaid as Aldo defends belt at UFC 136

Jose Aldo defended his featherweight championship with a decision over Kenny Florian at UFC 136 in Houston on Saturday. Aldo won the fight 49-46 on all three judges' cards.

Aldo also able to tag Florian in the first minutes of the bout, so Florian turned to takedowns. Aldo held off Florian's takedowns, but spent much of the round clinched against the fence defensively.

A tentative Aldo started the second round not throwing many of his patented leg kicks. As the round wore on, Aldo threw more of his kicks, but it was a tentative round for both fighters until Aldo tossed Florian's takedown attempt to the side, then landed a kick as Florian stood back up.

In the third round, Aldo became more comfortable, landing more kicks. Those kicks also set up strikes that damaged Florian. Aldo took Florian down in the third minute and moved to side control, then half-guard. Though Florian defended well, Aldo was in control. Florian escaped after Aldo wasn't able to accomplish much with the takedown, and the two finished the round in the clinch.

Florian returned to the clinch for much of the fourth round. When they were apart, Aldo got the better of their striking exchanges, but Florian had better Octagon control. As the fourth ended, Aldo smiled and gave the thumbs up to his cornermen, who advised him to stay away from the clinch and continue to kick low.

Unfortunately, he couldn't follow their directions early in the round, as Florian returned to the clinch. Florian slipped and fell to the ground. At first, he held off Aldo with upkicks, but Aldo found the right moment and got full guard. Florian defended the submission attempts and returned to his feet.

With two minutes left to go, Aldo pushed Florian against the fence until referee Dan Miragliotta separated them. Florian continued to try for the takedown that wasn't there the previous 23 minutes of the bout. Florian separated for a second to try to throw some home run punches, but then returned to the clinch.

After the fight, Aldo said through a translator that he was tentative on his kick because of Florian's takedowns. He also said that he came up with his gameplan after watching Florian's fight with B.J. Penn.

This was Florian's third time in a title fight, and his third loss. He tried for the lightweight title twice, against Penn and Sean Sherk. A drop down to featherweight opened the door for him to get another shot. With a loss in this bout, don't expect for Florian to get another shot at a belt. His record is 14-6.

Aldo successfully defended the UFC featherweight belt for the second time, as he beat Mark Hominck in a five-rounder at UFC 129. He first won this belt when the featherweight division was in the WEC, where he ran through the division on the way to the belt. Aldo's record now stands at 20-1.

Evans had to back out of title fight because of lingering thumb issues

Evans had to back out of title fight because of lingering thumb issues

On Wednesday, Dana White flipped out on Twitter on MMA media members who ran with a phony fight announcement that Rashad Evans would challenge UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones in December at UFC 140. Now we know why.

The reports were erroneous. Jones is fighting, but it'll be Lyoto Machida trying to snatch his belt. Evans had to drop out of the proposed fight because of an injury.pro

"After my last fight against Tito Ortiz, I dislocated my right thumb, which required it to be set back in place and held with pins. 24 hours ago, my physician removed the pins. At that time, I learned that it would require another three weeks of rehabilitation before engaging in any exercise or training that would require the use of my hand," Evans said in a release.

He's disappointed, but knows the show must go on.

"Dana White and I spoke earlier today, and I fully understand his decision to put Machida against Jones for the title at UFC 140. Given the rehabilitation time I require for my dislocated thumb, I would not be 100 percent ready by December 10," Evans said. "The UFC has to keep making fights that entertain the fans. I would have done the same thing as Dana in his position. I'm asking for the fans to support me as I rehabilitate my hand, and I promise I will be back fighting very quickly."

Jones and Evans have a nasty rivalry brewing. The trained together at Jackson's MMA in Albuquerque before Evans left to train elsewhere. They were scheduled to meet at UFC 133 in August, but Jones had to bail from the fight with his own hand injury. Now Jones must defend his belt against the very tough Machida to get his shot at Evans.

UFC 136 interview: Guillard is back home, it reminds him of how far he?s come

The Melvin Guillard you see today is all about fighting and family. It wasn't that way four years ago.

The 28-year-old made huge changes in his life and it has him on the brink of a UFC lightweight title shot if he gets the job done this weekend against Joe Lauzon at UFC 136 in Houston.

None of this was imaginable in 2007 and 2008. He spent time in jail and was popped by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for a positive cocaine test following a loss against Joe Stevenson.

"It was a stupid mistake on my part, listening to friends 'oh man, you can have a little fun tonight, it'll be out of your system within three days.' You live and you learn in life and it makes you stronger," Guillard told us on ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas. "I think I'm a better person today for it. I think sometimes you have to hit rock bottom sometimes to regain yourself. I'm happy with my life right now."

Guillard actually spent time in a Houston jail before heading off to rehab in 2008. The UFC dropped him, but eventually brought him back. Dana White has always had a soft spot in his heart for Guillard.

"I'm pretty sure before Dana White was a billionaire guy and had all this Fortune 500 company, I'm pretty sure he was a normal guy who made mistakes too," Guillard said. "Everybody makes mistakes. You on the other end of this phone, I'm pretty sure you've made mistakes in your life that you possibly might regret. That's just the human nature. [...] That might be why he understands."

Over the last four weeks, Guillard had the chance to visit both his original hometown New Orleans and his second hometown Houston. His wife is from the Houston area. In prepping for the fight, he put in plenty of time in Albuquerque, the home of Jackson's MMA. Guillard has put all the outside nonsense on the back burner and it's paying off.

He's won five in a row with the UFC, but the promotion has several options to turn to when the dust settles between the champ Frank Edgar and Gray Maynard. The Ben Henderson-Clay Guida winner is in the running and so is Gilbert Melendez, the lightweight champ with Strikeforce. Guillard's been wowing fans and the promotion in recent fights, but probably needs to do so again to get the championship match. Guillard's says he fine with whatever the promotion chooses. He just wants to fight consistently and keep his new life on course.
